I’ve been away from traditional media for the past couple of weeks and have been tied to a mac using Photoshop for ‘applied’ purposes. This is an experiment with layers and brushes of varying modes.

shite … I almost forgot to post!

jeesus … it’s the end of the day and I’m finally posting. I don’t have access to the Internet in the green mountain state of vermont, but I’m back in the fair city of boston so here we go. as you know, I’ve embarked on a project of drawing something everyday. often it’s on the phone, yet I do actually take pencil, oil stick and ink to paper, it’s just that it’s a bit easier to post the digital drawings. I highly recommend this as a way to stay in the game … to make sure your studio practice goes with you so you’re never able to say ” I couldn’t draw because …..”. the notion of the artist block starts to recede when you do something everyday …. it really does make a difference to keep moving along. so here’s my daily drawing ->

I’ve got nothing. I’ve been busy doing other things than making art the past couple of weeks, like  making some sort of a living, so I apologize for  being a kill joy.

Part of this is idle playing around, but I figure its still more productive than a video game, and allows me to play with some ideas. I’ll post more iterations and the source “drawings” I was using after the jump. Continue reading

But Is It Art Yet? Digital Art, Redux

Posted in Art, news with tags , , on September 8, 2009 by jdhastings

The New York Times has story today about digital art, a subject close to our hearts here at d’Arte Board. Not just because some of us partake of the genre, but because in the World Artists Network from whence we sprang it was a running joke that every 3 weeks or so a lively debate on the merits of “Digital Art” would spontaneously develop.

The NY Times article isn’t as fun as you typical free for all internet argument, but it does touch on some of the main questions posed by the genre: How do you display it, how do you protect distribution, in what form do you sell it, etc. I recommend it.

I do not recommend getting into an online argument over the question of whether the entire genre is valid or not. Though we do have a comments section here, if you have any thoughts.

The Greatest Digital Artists To Have Ever Lived

The title of this post is a bit of an inside joke, but is useful to frame some of the questions posed by a couple stories I’ve seen lately.

First, (courtesy of Art Fag City) is news that David Hockney is “painting” images on his iPhone (see above), then sells prints of them.

I’m undecided right now as to whether I’m more disappointed in Hockney for this, or anybody who would spend money on it. I mean, the image itself isn’t doing much to sell itself, so there must be some other factor going into it.
